Frequently Asked Questions
Is a doula the same as a midwife?
No. A midwife is a medically-trained professional able to deliver a baby. A doula is someone educated about and experienced with childbirth. A birth doula provides labor and birth support, including the use of nonmedical comfort measures and interventions.
What else does a doula do?
Aside from providing non-medical pain relief, a doula can fill many other roles. A doula can answer many questions you may have about pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care. A doula can assist you with writing your birth plan. In addition to helping you (the birthing person), the doula offers your partner/support person guidance and assistance. Moreover, a doula can offer you a list of related service providers in your area.
I want an epidural. Can I still receive doula services?
Absolutely! It is the doula’s goal to help you achieve a successful birth as YOU define it.
I identify as LGBTQIA+. Will a doula support me?
Southtowns Doula supports all birthing people and their support persons, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Does Southtowns Doula work only in the Southtowns?
No. Whether you live in Buffalo, Hamburg, or Niagara Falls, Southtowns Doula is here to support you.
Does Southtowns Doula offer any additional services?
Future services will include pre/post natal yoga and postpartum support.
